Steele is as captivating in his handling of RnB material as he is with soul, reggae, classical,and jazz. Born in Lucea Jamaica, Steele’s inspiration comes from his parents who sang on the churchchoir, where he too began singing at the tender age of 10. At age 11, he had developed an affinity forthe drums, noting that he was attracted to the physical appeal of this instrument.
After attendingRusea’s high for two years, at age 14, Steele entered the Herbert Morrison High School in MontegoBay, and it became clear that a career in music was imminent. Steele’s first taste of success came with his recording of Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky”,produced by veteran singer and producer Tristan Palmer, but before the songs full potential could berealized, Steele had to migrate to Canada. This however did not stop his continued quest to achievegreatness, and his persistence has definitely paid off. Steele is now regarded as the most consistentreggae artist to call Canada home, his music transcends all ages, gender and color.
He has made anindelible imprint on the reggae music-loving audiences with appearances at various venues in mostmajor cities in Canada. Steele has performed to rave reviews at the Jambana Festival, EglingtonStreet Festival, Rasta Fest, the Caribana Island Jam and Jamaica Day Celebration held in Toronto.The Winnipeg Caribbean Festival in Manitoba, Gage Park It’s your Festival in Hamilton, MeloProduction concert series in Vancouver, and the Calgary Reggae Festival, just to name a few.
He hasappeared internationally, performing in Africa to an audience in excess of 20,000 and is now creatinga lasting impression with his live performances in Jamaica and the USA. Steele has performed onshows such as Rebel Salute, Unity Splash, and the Peter Tosh Birthday Celebration, and in theUSA has appeared on major reggae festival such as Irie Jamboree. “Silhouette”, cover of the llate D. Brown, represents Steele’s break-through song, and he has notslowed down since.
Other songs to hit the local charts include “Jah Is My Strength”, which continuesto be a source of inspiration to many around the globe. It is not surprising that Steele is a muchsought-after artist for live performances. He has shared the stage with some of reggae’s mostrespected artists, such as Freddie McGregor, Rita Marley, Tony Rebel, Sanchez, Luciano, and QueenIfrica among others.
Today, Steele has made his mark on the music industry and although most people recognize him as asinger, Steele is an accomplished musician, songwriter, and producer who have earned a reputationas a perfectionist with his professional approach to his music. In 2004 Steele released his first fulllength solo CD/Album “Uncorrupted” and the world stood up to take note of this lyrically consciousbrother. To date, Steele has been blessed with the achievements this album has attained.
Tracks from“Uncorrupted” hit many charts globally and in Canada, the cd was showered with many accoladeswhich included Canada’s highest musical award, a Juno nomination for Reggae Recording of theYear. Steele has since then seen his popularity grow significantly, he accredits this to the blessingsfrom the almighty and the love from his many fans that continue to support his music.
In 2007, Steeledropped his sophomore cd entitled “The Love of Jah” and the critics hailed it as his finest work todate. Steele was blessed once again with the achievement of being named “Best Male Vocalist of theYear”, “Best Songwriter of the Year”, and Top CD/Album of the year for The Love of Jah , and theoverall Artist of the Year by the Reggae Music Achievement Awards.
Hits from that Cd included“What's Wrong Wid Wi”, a duet with crooner George Nooks, “New World” with Queen Ifrica, andhis heart felt rendition of “Slave Driver”, the Bob Marley original .In 2009, Steele released his latestcd “The Man The Music” and again captured more hearts with his release. With no letting up, theCD received another two awards from the RMAA.Steele continues to deliver heartfelt performance whenever he’s called upon.
In 2010, Steele made hisdebut appearance on the internationally recognized Reggae Sumfest in Jamaica, and both audienceand media showed the Canadian sensation the true love he deserved. In 2011 he was awarded withthe first Irie Music Award for “Male Artist of the Year”, then 2012 Steele was nominated for his secondJUNO award. Most recently in 2013 Steele was once again recognized as Canadian ReggaePerformer of the year and Canadian International Reggae Artist of the Year.
